Daughn Gibson Signs to Sub Pop, Shares Drawling and Dynamic ‘The Sound of Law’

Daughn Gibson the Sound of Law Me Moan Album

Daughn Gibson’s music is as rich as his back story. The guy is a “honkey-tonk spaceman who, at one time, earned his daily wage as a truck driver,” as SPIN’s David Bevan put it in the review for All Hell, the Pennsylvania musician’s break-out album. That stunning set, which found the baritone-blessed singer employing samples to carve out a new country niche, only came out a year ago, but he’s ready to follow it up with Me Moan on July 9.

The new album will be the former Pearls and Brass drummer’s first for Sub Pop and was announced with a stream of the new song “The Sound of Law.” That first taste kicks off with a steady four-four pulse and a guitar lick that sounds plucked from a bar band’s set at a biker booze hole. Strange ambient swells sneak in as Gibson sings strange things about bad dads, drifters, and women. According to the physical press release, Baroness guitarist John Baizley contributes to Me Moan, as does Brokeback’s Jim Elkington. Gibson co-produced the record himself with help from Benjamin Balcom (Mahjongg, the 1900s).
