Danny Brown Is His Very Own ‘ODB’ in Trippy Video

Danny Brown ODB video Old album

With his funky teeth, oddball persona, and a profane flow that occasionally suggests a tenuous grasp on reality, Danny Brown will always be dogged by comparisons to the late, great Ol’ Dirty Bastard. But rather than let the Wu-Tang legend’s shadow hold him down, the Detroit rapper faces the pigeonholing head on with his third album Old and its newest song, “ODB.” Here, Brown cleverly applies the ODB moniker to himself, explaining how he is, in fact, a dirty bastard with the “mind of a pervert” who frequently gets nasty in alleyways without using protection.

The accompanying video is fairly straightforward, featuring Brown rapping over the Paul White beat with some acid-trip effects added. As for the album title, Brown recently explained that Old doesn’t mean what you probably think it means. “With ‘Old’ you think I’m talking about my age, or where I’m at in my career,” he told Clash. “But it really [refers to] when I’m experimenting, making songs with Darq E Freaker and stuff. And then when I go back to my ‘hood, I have my people who be like, ‘Where that ‘Old’ Danny Brown shit at? I wanna hear that J. Dilla Danny Brown.’ So I [titled the] album for them.”

The follow-up to 2011’s unforgettable XXX is due out September 30 via Fool’s Gold and features guest spots from A$AP Rocky, Freddie Gibbs, Purity Ring, Schoolboy Q, and Charli XCX, as well as production by A-Trak and Rustie. Bonus round:
