See D’Angelo Own Prince’s ‘My Summertime Thang’ in Bonnaroo 2012 Behind-the-Scenes Video

D'Angelo, Bonnaroo

Last year, D’Angelo stunned Bonnaroo festival-goers with his first U.S. concert in 12 years. The neo-soul hero’s unannounced return came during Roots drummer ?uestlove’s annual Superjam, and, as SPIN’s Chris Martins recorded, “Backed by an all-star lineup, the once reclusive singer and multi-instrumentalist was confident, friendly, and in top form.” Get a glimpse of the superlatively funky proceedings above, in the first episode of a documentary series on the concert. The video includes footage of D’Angelo and the band ebulliently covering 1990’s “My Summertime Thang,” originally credited to Minneapolis group the Time but written and produced by Prince. Also catch interviews with Questo, bassist Pino Palladino, and others involved with this very welcome event. Other episodes are promised soon. Could this mean D’Angelo’s follow-up to his classic Voodoo is any closer to completion?
