The top movie at the box office this weekend stars an actress who drew inspiration from Crystal Castles' Alice Glass. The second best-selling movie stars the same actress, though Glass can't claim any credit for that one.
Jessica Chastain told MTV News that Glass helped inspire her role in horror movie Mama, which grossed $28.1 million over the weekend. Coming in second at the box office with $17.6 million was Osama Bin Laden-chasing, Zero Dark Thirty, which landed Chastain a Golden Globe win and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Mama's main character, Annabel, is a would-be punk, and Chastain reportedly even based her haircut on a photo of Crystal Castles' Glass. The director "sent me pictures of Alice Glass," Chastain is quoted as saying. "I thought, 'Oh, my God. She's so rad. That's a great idea for the character.'" (We think it's rad we aren't the only ones who still say "rad.")
Given Glass' larger-than-life onstage presence, it's almost a surprise she hasn't inspired a cinematic portrayal before, and here's hoping this isn't the last. Earlier this week, Crystal Castles unveiled a probably-creepier-than-Mama video for "Sad Eyes," a dance-y standout from new album III. And interviewing Glass can't be much easier than finding Bin Laden, can it?
