The gossamer, earthy, indie rock stylings of Coyote Bones feature guitarist David Matysiak (guitar/vocals) and Mason Brown (bass/percussion). The duo, which formed out of ashes out their previous band, the emo-centric Jet by Day, set out on a road trip for a host of informal recording sessions in late last summer. Jetting between their Athens, GA home base and the friendly nooks of Omaha, NE, Coyote Bones collected a dozen song setlist, complete with guest spots from Jacob Thiele (The Faint), Matt Baum (Desaparecidos), and Dan McCarthy (Bright Eyes, Tilly and the Wall), as well as Orenda Fink (Azure Ray) and Neely Jenkins (Tilly and the Wall). The Faint's Joel Petersen and producer/engineer Andy LeMaster added the golden touches to this otherwise genre-blending guitar record.
On the "Grand Eclipse," an acoustic-driven slowburn of layered synthesizers, gauzy guitar riffs, and splashing drums, is just a glimpse into Coyote Bones' atmospheric state-of-mind. Fans of Death Cab for Cutie's epic moments and Maria Taylor's latest (Lynn Teeter Flower) and even classic Hooverphonic will soak up Coyote Bones' earnest simplicity. Gentleman on the Rocks is out May 29 on CoCo Art.
