Coma Cinema’s Aching ‘Virgin Veins’ Tells of Trauma

coma cinema, posthumous release, virgin veins

A self-deprecating spark burns bright on Coma Cinema’s bare new track “Virgin Veins.” The since-abandoned project of South Carolina singer/songwriter Mat Cothran, Coma Cinema’s output circa 2011 is an expansive account of strange and beautiful survival, featuring spare drums, purring acoustic hums, and wispy vocals that warm the ear. On “Virgin Veins,” Cothran — who now records as Elvis Depressedly — heart-wrenchingly explains: “The heart is a monument / to a childhood of abuse.”

The track appears on Coma Cinema’s Posthumous Release, which is out today (June 11) on Fork & Spoon Records, and from which we’ve already sampled “Burn a Church” and “Satan Made a Mansion.”
