Watch the Coathangers Solve a Jazz Age Murder Mystery in ‘Derek’s Song’ Video

The Coathangers

Earlier this year, the Coathangers released “Derek’s Song,” the lead track on a split 7-inch single with Suicide Squeeze labelmates Nü Sensae. As the all-girl punk crew tells it, the tattered bouncer is about the loss of their “very good friend,” Seattle musician Derek Shepherd, who died last year and can be seen in this photo with the Coathangers. Fitting, then, that the track’s just-released video is plagued with death. The black-and-white clip — directed by Mike Moore (who also helmed the band’s “Hurricane” and “Trailer Park Boneyard” videos), with production handled by Studio 8 — finds the Atlanta garage rock queens getting decadent in a hotel room. Champagne flows, cocaine is snorted, and bathroom hook-ups are initiated, but soon enough the bodies start to pile up. Watch it above, and find upcoming tour dates below.
