To be fair, Neutral Milk Hotel was a better set — a transcendent collision of searing voice and exuberant instrumentation that may have actually woken the ghost of Anne Frank — but Jeff Mangum banned all photography so it's on to LDR, who provided the festival's most jarring juxtaposition by following the Elephant 6 act. (Also, a dangerous crowd situation as the Lanatics rushed the front-of-stage, trapping NMH fans who had to be pulled over the barricades by security.) As for her performance, it was as perplexing a thing as you'd expect. Backed by a spare band, she opened with "Cola" and soon descended into the photo pit where she was met with unwanted groping (again, the festival guards proved useful as they pried hands from her red floral minidress). She then returned to the stage with a "Well, shit" and mumble-cooed through Ultraviolence share "Meet Me in the Pale Moonlight." Other things Del Rey did: vamp through fog; poutily ask for more time when she already had it; perform "Blue Jeans" and "Summertime Sadness"; sing quite well, haters; goofily say, "You're energy is so so good"; not bring out A$AP Rocky; and smoke a cigarette onstage. Spectacle achieved.
