Christopher Owens Strips Down the Jackson 5’s ‘I’ll Be There’

Christopher Owens

During a recent stopover at the University of Minnesota college radio station Radio K, Christopher Owens unexpectedly broke out a decidedly un-Christopher Owens song to cover: the Jackson 5‘s “I’ll Be There.” Swapping the original’s gentle harpsichord intro for a simple guitar accompaniment, the former Girls singer shouldn’t have sounded as good as he did covering the ’70s pop standard, but there’s just something about his cracking, nasally voice stuttering, “Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter / Together this is all I’m after / Where there is love / I’ll be there.” Consider us endeared.
