Chance the Rapper’s SXSW Show Shut Down for Overcrowding

Chance the Rapper, SXSW, shutdown

Chance the Rapper’s SXSW started off on a down note, with the Austin, Texas fire marshal stopping his highly anticipated show at Red 7 after 18 minutes due to overcrowding. According to the Chicago Tribune, 350 people crammed into the 300-capacity venue to see the 1 a.m. set by SPIN’s 2013 Rapper of the Year, necessitating the shutdown. Fans at the City of Chicago Showcase chanted for him to return, but they eventually gave up when it was clear that the fire marshal and police wouldn’t be swayed.

The disappointment bookended a big day for Chance: He’s also featured on Skrillex’s new album Recess, which dropped in the early morning hours with no warning. The track, “Coast Is Clear,” features the Acid Rap star alternating between laid-back crooning and rapidfire spitting. Aside from the oft-repeated “Do you wanna fuck?” line, there’s one lyric fans will surely respond to: “Dance like it hurts to stand still.” That’s a command we can get behind, as long as the fire marshal lets us.
