For a 20-year-old, Chance the Rapper is strikingly introspective. The LSD-dropping Chicago rapper covers a staggering amount of ground on each track of his SPIN Essential Acid Rap, and “Everybody’s Something is no exception. As our own Brandon Soderberg noted, the song is “a quasi-romantic though mostly real-talk evaluation of how and why we learn to care for one another [in which] the 20-year-old Chicagoan mentions that God doesn’t seem to answer his calls, imagines Jesus’ Twitter account, wonders if he would even bother to follow that Twitter account, and while you’re catching up with that Web 2.0 faith crisis, reminds you of his hometown’s hallowed blues tradition. Then he zings the Rolling Stones for being mad late on co-opting that stuff.”
And now, with an assist from director Austin Vesely, Chance takes the song’s themes to an even deeper, trippier level. Set against a backdrop of interstellar effects and a mishmash of film and news clips, the Rapper takes the Viewer on a poignant journey through his life and mind. At one point, while he raps “And why’s God’s phone die every time that I call on Him? / If his son had a Twitter wonder if I would follow him,” we see Chance tweeting, “@God Are you there? It’s me Chancelor.” It’s a stark contrast against the next verse in which he rhymes, “Like I’m dancing with the Devil with two left feet and I’m pigeon toed / In two small point ballet shoes with a missing sole / And two missing toes.”
