Flying Lotus (as Captain Murphy) Leads All-Star Rap Roster on Blunted Single ‘Between Villains’

The grinning "Between Villains" single

Flying Lotus — both as himself and as his rap alter-ego Captain Murphy — has been a close friend and collaborator of L.A. rap whiz kid Earl Sweatshirt (who began streaming his new LP, Doris, yesterday). Earl has been on the scene for both of the big moments in FlyLo’s career as Captain Murphy: Earl duels with him on “Between Friends,” which was Captain Murphy’s first on-mic appearance, and at the show in which FlyLo publicly revealed himself as his alter-ego. Now the two have united once again for another career mile-marker: a team-up with MF Doom, whose dizzying, stoned mumbles has been a major influence on both Earl and Captain Murphy.

The track — which also features bass gymnast Thundercat — is “Between Villains,” the newest joint from Adult Swim’s single series. Neither Earl nor FlyLo exactly out-pace Doom — who appears in top form as his own side-persona Viktor Vaughn — but all three fit together like puzzle pieces spilled from the same box. The track can be streamed below and downloaded through Adult Swim’s website.
