Last week, one of the greatest bands of all time (which happens to be made up of three women,) sat down with the creators and stars of one of the funniest new shows on television (also women) for a great conversation about their work, feminism, and refusing to be defined by their gender. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, the geniuses behind Comedy Central’s Broad City, interviewed Sleater-Kinney at New York City’s Ace Hotel. The recently reunited riot grrrl icons and the up-and-coming showrunners were big fans of one another’s work. Jacobson and Glazer said Broad City wouldn’t exist without Sleater-Kinney, while Corin Tucker expressed her admiration for the duo’s show, saying “When we watch your show, I want to write a song.”
Over the course of the lengthy interview they discussed feminism and the expectations society has for female acts — and how Sleater-Kinney subverted them. “I feel very strongly about that,” Janet Weiss said. “An alternative to the idea of women being a certain way. The quiet, demure, soft-spoken sort of stereotype. The three of us get on stage and we really try to break that down and give people who feel differently than that a place to go and a place to express themselves.”
They also talked about some more flippant topics, and at one point answered questions submitted by Broad City executive producer and S-K fan Amy Poehler. Watch the whole interview above via NPR.
