Mumford & Sons, Coldplay, Lana Del Rey, Black Keys pick up trophies, too

Frank Ocean, Adele, and Emeli Sandé won big at this year's BRIT Awards, held today (February 20) at London's O2 Arena. Ocean snagged the trophy for International Male Solo Artist, Adele nabbed the British Single statue for her Oscar-nominated "Skyfall" theme, and Sandé took home two awards: British Female Solo Artist and the night's top honor, the MasterCard British Album of the Year for her debut album, Our Version of Events.

Other notable victories: Mumford & Sons followed their Grammy win by laying claim to the British Group category; Coldplay were dubbed the best British Live Act; English singer-songwriter Ben Howard collected awards for British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act; Lana Del Rey picked up International Female Solo Artist; and the Black Keys earned International Group.

The ceremony also included live performances from Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Emeli Sandé, Mumford, Muse, One Direction, Robbie Williams, and Ben Howard.

Sandé and Adele's 2013 wins serve as correctives to last year's broadcast, in which producers rudely cut away from both artists after they won awards.

The 2012 British Album of the Year award went to Adele for her massively successful 21, but the Oscar-nominated singer was interrupted in the middle of her acceptance speech. Adele responded in M.I.A.-like fashion and gave the finger to "the suits" running the show. Regarding the incident, BRITs chairman David Joseph recently said to the Guardian, "How can you take an artist who has made the biggest cultural impact musically this country has seen globally for some time and cut her off in the middle of her speech?" He added, "I very much to this day question what was happening in that control booth."

Sandé was denied the spotlight entirely after she won 2012's Critic's Choice BRIT. She reportedly didn't get to accept the honor onstage because of time constraints. The snub left Sandé in tears, according to the Daily Record.
