Bono’s Bike Accident Injuries May Keep Him From Playing Guitar Ever Again

Bono Bike Accident May Never Play Guitar Again

Back in November, Bono ended up in a New York hospital during the aftermath of a pretty horrifying bicycle accident in Central Park, though aside from some gory descriptions of his injury it was unclear at the time just how bad it was. In a new blog post on U2’s website, via Buzzfeed, the Songs of Innocence singer reflected back on the strange course of his year, including the horrifying accident, mentioning that the injury and a new “titanium elbow” may hamper future efforts at playing guitar.

“Recovery has been more difficult than I thought,” he explains. “As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again.”

The tone of the message isn’t terribly dour across the board though. Despite mentioning that he’ll miss “fingering the frets” of his guitars, he rightly notes that neither his band “nor Western civilization are depending” on him being able to play again.

Looking back on the injury, Bono says he doesn’t blame anyone but himself, mostly because he blacked out when he hit the ground and has little memory of the incident other than waking up the hospital with a compound fracture. He did note however that seeing his bone sticking through a leather jacket was “very punk rock as injuries go.”

On a lighter note, Bono also reflected on the rest of U2’s year, including their time at the Oscars and the release of Songs of Innocence (which he says was to be like “a bottle of milk dropped at the door of anyone interested in music and iTunes”), as well as a whole lot more, so feel free to head over to U2’s website to read the whole post.
