Bob Dylan and The Who Are Heading to an Arena Near You (Separately)

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan may never stop touring, but he hasn’t announced an arena-level trek in six years — until now. His fresh dates starting next month will be in support of his 35th studio effort, Tempest, which arrives September 11 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his debut self-titled record.

In somewhat more unexpected news, the Who have also announced an arena tour, which marks their first dates since 2008 (though they did a pretty hilarious job of playing the Super Bowl in 2010). The band will will be playing the entirety of their 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia on their two-legged 2012-2013 jaunt, in addition to the hits they probably wouldn’t be able to get away forgetting. They won’t, per the AP, be reviving late founding members drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle via hologram, as the Olympics might have hoped they would.

“I thought about it but everybody is doing it now,” said Roger Daltrey when he and Pete Townshend appeared at a press conference to announce the tour. “I don’t know whether we need it. And it’s only a gimmick. We were very good on gimmicks in the ’70s but I think we can leave it alone now.” Instead, Zak Starkey, Pino Palladino, Simon Townshend, Chris Stainton, Loren Gold and Frank Simes will support the two living original members, per Reuters.

Both tours, incidentally, will feature stops in Brooklyn, New York, at the new Barclay Center, the imminent home of Jay-Z’s Brooklyn Nets. Tickets for the Who’s tour go on sale to the band’s official fan club at 10 a.m. tomorrow (July 20) and will be released to the public next Friday (July 27). Dylan’s tour, which will be supported by Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler as a “special guest,” is on sale now.
