The Black Ghosts
Who? No, your disco's not haunted -- it's just at the hands of Simian's Simon Lord and Wiseguys' DJ Touche (nee Theo Keating), together known as the Black Ghosts. With an affection for horror, sci-fi, and fantasy flicks, plus an emotive pop prowess, the duo made their U.S. debut with the Any Way You Choose To Give It EP late last month, which arrived via California indie label IAMSOUND.
What's the Deal? At times throwing back to their native nation's new wave nuances and at others sampling metal shreds akin to musical amalgamate Girl Talk, the Black Ghosts will get you moving without fail. The twosome's tunes are dependent on the integration of inspiration, ranging from dance dynamos like Daft Punk and Justice to the moody sensitivity and bleak romanticism of Serge Gainsbourg and New Order. The result is dark, daring electro-synth songs with thoughtful lyrics taken from a cynical and strangely empowering perspective. The danceable duality from Lord and Keating are built to last and their title track is bound to be the next banger that'll close 2007, requiring all of your excitable effort 'any way you choose to give it.'
Fun Fact: Simon Lord is the voice and songwriter behind Justice vs. Simian's massive international dance hit "We Are Your Friends."
