Independent woman Beyoncé will star in an upcoming feature-length HBO documentary she directed herself. The film, slated to premiere on February 16, 2013, is "a fusion of video that provides raw, unprecedented access to the private entertainment icon and high-voltage performances," the network promises in a statement. HBO subscribers will get to peek behind the "veneer of stardom" for an intimate look at the Grammy-winning, chart-dominating wife and mother at the center of the Beyoncé brand.

“Everybody knows Beyoncé’s music, but few know Beyoncé the person,” Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming, said. “Along with electrifying footage of Beyoncé onstage, this unique special looks beyond the glamour to reveal a vibrant, vulnerable, unforgettable woman.”

The singer, who also serves as the doc's executive producer, returned the compliments. “HBO has a history of pushing every boundary with class and authenticity,” Beyoncé said. “Some of my favorite shows are on HBO, so I am excited that my film will be part of its bold programming. This film was so personal to me, it had to have the right home." Beyoncé: total closet Hung fan, right?

The documentary, which will air roughly two weeks after Beyoncé’s Super Bowl XLVII halftime performance on February 3, will feature clips from home movies filmed during the star's childhood in Houston, along with first-person footage shot by Bey herself, on her laptop. Fans can expect the Sasha Fierce singer, who made her directorial debut with the video for 2009 single "Ego," to discuss celebrity, performing, and motherhood. The now-untitled production will touch on Beyoncé’s decision to fire her ex-manager and father, Matthew Knowles, and focus on the demands of being a businesswoman, pop icon, live performer, and new mom. Who runs the world, indeed.
