Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino revealed back in January that she and bandmate Bobb Bruno would hit the studio this month to record a new EP, but didn’t share any other details on the upcoming project. The SPIN cover star still hasn’t unveiled the release date, track list, or title for The Only Place follow-up, but the 26-year-old frontwoman has teased a brand new Best Coast song that will see sunshine on Record Store Day (April 20). Presumably the two aren’t from or for the same thing.
Judging from the minute-long preview below, the new track, titled “Fear of My Identity,” signals a return to the duo’s fuzz-filtered pop-punk chords of yore. Though not quite as lo-fi as, say, their cover of Lesley Gore’s “That’s the Way Boys Are,” “Fear of My Identity” is a far cry from The Only Place‘s country-tinged balladry. Backed by a chugging guitar, Cosentino repeatedly wails “You taught me that my heart would grow old,” just before her dad, Ricky Cosentino, pitches in with a Phil Spector-pinched drum kick.
The “Fear of My Identity” 7-inch, which is sponsored by footwear company Clarks Originals, will be available on Record Store Day 2013 (April 20) at participating stores. Keep an eye out for a short documentary about the vinyl’s recording, which will debut on the Clarks Originals website on March 4.
