Ben Kweller Performs 'Today,' Talks Pumpkins

Kweller offers Spin a live rendition of "Today," a tour of his 'hood, and details his love for Smashing Pumpkins.

Spin's July issue hits newsstands today sporting a free CD with ten covers of Smashing Pumpkins classics, presented by MySpace, Helio, and Spin. One of the artists on that CD, New York City troubadour Ben Kweller, invited SPIN.com to his Brooklyn abode for a for a brief interview and live rendition of his preferred Pumpkins tune. But what transpired was a three-hour adventure throughout Kweller's neighborhood and a sincere rendering of "Today" poised in front of Lady Liberty on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Join us in Kweller's Volvo, a.k.a. Annabelle, for an insightful interview in which the rocker exposes his thoughts on Pumpkins' Siamese Dream ("It sounds like a thousand razorblades slicing the speakers"), his lyrical interpretation of "Today," ("It seems like he's trying to hold onto something good"), and the landmark influence of the band in general ("It's just one of those bands that has the perfect package").
