Austra Release Sparse, Synth-Heavy Cover of Duran Duran’s ‘American Science’

Austra Duran Duran 'American Science' cover Making Patterns Rhyme

The Duran Duran tribute album Making Patterns Rhyme is due out July 15 and as yet another preview, following Warpaint’s sooty interpretation of “The Chauffer” and Beliefs’ shoegaze take on “Sound of Thunder,” you can now hear Austra’s cover of the ’86 Notorious cut “American Science.” The Toronto trio strip away the horn-heavy pomp of the original in favor of sparse synths and twitchy percussion, leaving the focus on Katie Stelmanis’ vocals. It’s a similar sound to their recently released single “Habitat,” which comes from the EP of the same name. Meanwhile, you can pick up Making Patterns Rhymefrom Manimal Records, who will donate all proceeds to Amnesty International.
