The music of Antwon — whose new mixtape, In Dark Denim (Greedhead), was named SPIN’s Rap Release of the Week — rides on a lighthearted hedonism, which makes the video for “3rd World Grrl” acutely appropriate. The video depicts a puppet version of Antwon bouncing around a club, smacking asses, snorting coke and getting his belly rubbed before finally getting flipped off — just a regular night out, or at least his fuzzy alter-ego. But maybe not: that narrative is juxtaposed with shots of the real-life Antwon rapping blankly into a fisheye lens. And those images lock in place with the rest of on-record Antwon, who often raps about suicide.
