Alt-J Release Strange and Erotic ‘Every Other Freckle’

Alt-J New Single Every Other Freckle

On the heels of Alt-J’s poppiest single to date—“Left Hand Free,” a product of record-label interference that actually wound up working—the British trio has just released a very, very weirdly assembled new song dubbed “Every Other Freckle.” The track is equal parts folk (with a lyrical diss at hand-clapping paired with the sound of actual hand claps), Oompa Loompa anthem, and typical Alt-J sonic fuzziness complete with the band’s trademark soulful vocals. Its words are just as odd but they really work, like when lead singer Joe Newman goes, “[I’ll] turn you inside out to lick you like a crisp packet.” Or when he says something about golden showers. And maybe references snowballing. Turn to Urban Dictionary if you need help with those last two. Alt-J’s second album, This Is All Yours, will be released on September 22. Listen to “Every Other Freckle” below, then, for the cold-shower effect, revisit the terrifying video for “Hunger of the Pine.”
