Hear Alex G's Guitar-Pop Grotesquerie 'Black Hair'

Another warped pop missive from the Philadelphia songwriter's June LP

Following a host of bedroom-recorded Bandcamp releases, Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Alex G is poised to release his first proper LP, DSU on June 17. Today, he's released another gnarled little gem from that record called "Black Hair."

Though presumably still recorded on a single microphone duct-taped to his bedroom desk, "Black Hair" (like "Harvey" and DSU as a whole) represents a massive step forward for his weirdo guitar-pop. Reedy vocals compete for space with atonal pricks of feedback, but the whole thing is underpinned by the sooty thump and snap of acoustic guitar and drums that place the whole thing in the realm of dusty early Why? recordings.

Released through Orchid Tapes, Brooklyn's tiny cassette label that could, DSU sold out its first pressing within a matter of hours from its pre-sale announcement. The second run, which you can grab at Orchid Tapes web store, has just a handful of copies left and it's not immediately apparent if they intend to make more soon.
