Air Unleash New Single With Beach House’s Legrand

Last year, French duo Air, who already had lunar travel on their résumé thanks to their debut Moon Safari, were commissioned to provide a soundtrack for a new print of Georges Méliès’ legendary silent film La Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip to the Moon) that was premiering at Cannes. Even though Méliès’ film only has a runtime of 10 minutes, the group still produced enough music from the sessions to fill an entire album. The outcome is their new disc called, surprise, La Voyage Dans La Lune, Air’s first album since 2009’s Love 2.

Previous Air albums have featured guest vocalists like Beck, Jarvis Cocker, and the Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon, and La Voyage gets off to a particularly dream-poppy start thanks to Beach House’s Victoria Legrand, who appears on first single “Seven Stars.” Legrand isn’t the only singer to appear on La Voyage Dans La Lune; the album will also boast vocals from Au Revoir Simone.

Air have tackled this interstellar theme before on tracks like “Kelly Watch the Stars!” and “Surfing on a Rocket,” and the results were typically awesome. “Seven Stars” continues that trend: It’s lush and atmospheric, and as Air’s Nicolas Godin promised, the sound is “more organic” than previous albums, which means an emphasis on pianos as opposed to keyboards. There’s a spoken word countdown in the middle of the song that brings “Seven Stars'” ascension crashing to a halt, but after that little bump Legrand completely takes over for the song’s cinematic, skyscraping closing minutes.

La Voyage Dans La Lune lands on February 7. Check out “Seven Stars” at NME.
