The world is rarely in a place where it couldn’t use a new version of Afroman’s singular 2001 one-off stoner smash “Because I Got High,” and with momentum growing ever stronger for marijuana usage being made legal across the nation, the rapper born Joseph Edgar Foreman has finally updated his signature tune.
The new version, as premiered today by Billboard, is much less foreboding about the narcotic’s after-effects. Done in partnership with Norml (a “green-friendly non-profit lobbying organization”) and produced with weed-dispensery locator Weedmaps, the song envisions a post-weed-legalization utopia in which pot cures Afroman’s glaucoma, enables him to quit smoking cigarettes, and puts an end to his anxiety attacks. “Every single verse in this song is accurate and can be corroborated by research,” Norml director of strategic partnerships Sabrina Fendrick testifies.
