Two weeks ago The Academy Is... performed at Fueled by Ramen's 15th birthday bash. As of this past weekend, however, the band that once inspired SPIN to write the sentence, "Watch your back, Fall Out Boy — a new guyliner sheriff's in town" was no more. In a statement simply labeled "Announcement" posted on their official website, the Chicago rockers explain they've accomplished all they aimed to achieve over the course of nine years and three albums, effectively ending their unspoken battle of irritatingly punctuated band names with Panic! At the Disco.

"We began in 2003 as three young friends in the suburbs of Chicago, with dreams of creating music that meant something to us. Dreams of leaving those suburbs behind and seeing all of the beautiful things that this world has to offer," the band writes. "The Academy Is... has made its mark."

The group also imply there were troubles along the way, noting, "While we have never managed to make things easy on ourselves, it is safe to say that we have always found common ground in our love of music." They vow to continue recording and releasing songs — just not together.

Sniff your way through photos from one of the final The Academy Is... gigs in New York.

Fans' responses on Facebook were unsurprisingly emotional, ranging the simple ("NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!") to the more anguished ("Your music got me through my high school years"). Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta tweeted, "i refuse to accept this," but so far Pete Wentz has remained quiet.
