The 1900s

Who? Chicago, IL’s the 1900s features Jeanine O’Toole (vocals/tambourine), Caroline Donovan (vocals), Edward Anderson (vocals/guitar), Michael Jasinski (piano/guitar), Tim Minnick (drums), Charlie Radford (bass) and Andra Kulans (violin). The shiny happy pop outfit formed in 2004, and issued their EP stunner, Plume Delivery, for the Parasol imprint last year. This fall, the group will rejoin The Dishes’ Graeme Gibson at Clava/4 Deuces Studio in Chicago to begin recording their first studio long-player.

What’s the Deal? Made up of longtime friends and ex-lovers, the 1900’s gorgeous pop sound is a delightful mix of their favorites — the Velvet Underground, the Zombies, and Fleetwood Mac. Signed to Parasol after their 2005 performance debut opening for Bobby Conn, the seven-piece collective offer the right dose of new millennium indie pop without the saccharine. Songs such as the ’60s shimmy and shake of “Bring the Good Boys Home” and the lush psychedelic layers of “Whole of the Law” will tug on your heartstrings oh so slighty, just enough for you to fall for the 1900s.

Fun Fact: Performing at this year’s annual SXSW festival, the vivacious O’Toole admits to lovin’ the love. “A lot of us have known each other for a while now,” she says. “I used to go with Charlie. Ed and Caroline are dating now. Ed, Mike, and Tim all know each other from high school, and from playing in bands together.” MACKENZIE WILSON
