10 Albums to Stream: Bruce Springsteen, Damien Jurado, Sharon Jones, More

bruce springsteen, high hopes, new album, stream

It’s that time of the week again: We’ve rounded up the best album streams available online. Scroll down to find links to the latest from Bruce Springsteen, Damien Jurado, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Del the Funky Homosapien, and more.

1) Bruce Springsteen, High Hopes.High Hopes is Bruce Springsteen’s 18th studio effort… [Rage Against the Machine’s Tom] Morello appears on eight of the album’s songs, including a reworked version of 1995’s ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad,’ in which he duets with Springsteen. The collection also packs in covers of tracks by Suicide (‘Dream Baby Dream’) and Australian punks the Saints (‘Just Like Fire Would’), as well as a studio version of ‘American Skin (41 Shots),’ a song that has so far only been available as a live recording.” — SPIN (via CBS)

2) Damien Jurado, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son.Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son is intended as a sequel to 2012’s Maraqopa… but it’s far from a rehash of old ideas. Both records reflect on ideas of alienation, disappearance and the pursuit of self, yet Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son takes them further, while enshrouding Jurado’s voice in arrangements that alternately sparkle and search.” (via NPR)

3) Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Give the People What They Want. “Set, as always, against The Dap-Kings’ characteristically springy horns, Jones growls and struts through 10 timeless songs that couldn’t sound better suited to the big stage. It’s to her credit that the studio serves them, too, throughout an album that deftly and efficiently carries out the mission suggested by its title.” (via NPR)

4) Rosanne Cash, The River & the Thread. “It’s tempting — and, really, accurate — to describe Rosanne Cash’s new album as a literary effort… Each song is rooted in the Southern soil connecting the old Cash homestead in Arkansas to the family’s ancestral Virginia homeland, expanding to survey the family’s artistic roots in Alabama and Tennessee. Some narratives are fictional, while others mine family lore. Each unfolds in a subtle arc made three-dimensional by Cash’s introspective lyrics and the genre-dissolving blend of country, soul and torch songs that she and her husband and producer, John Leventhal, cultivate.” (via NPR)

5) Gripe, In His Image. “Like past efforts, In His Image infests itself with the grinding groove sickness of Assück, the pig-grunt punk of Insect Warfare and a boozy slurp of Black Sabbath doom. But Gripe has finally blown past the RIYLs and carved out a bloody vein of its own. A track like ‘Future Pigs’ — the band’s longest at a whopping 3:28 — seethes and swelters, with a sludge-drenched riff that launches into a pit of abominable terror.” (via NPR)

6) Del the Funky Homosapien, Iller Than Most. “Fresh off last year’s Deltron 3030 resurgence, Del the Funky Homosapien has new solo material to share. He’s posted a (surprise) new “free LP” called Iller Than Most on SoundCloud, where he writes: ‘Lyrically ill but fun to listen to, nothing super heavy. I did the production on it as well.'” — Pitchfork (via SoundCloud)

7) The Crystal Method, The Crystal Method. “A little weekend surprise for you: We have an early preview of the [fifth] studio album from EDM pioneers the Crystal Method. Since their debut in the mid-90s, the duo has influenced countless electronic composers and ventured into film/TV scores, video games and more.” (via the Hype Machine)

8) Diplo, “Diplo Rounds Up 2013.” “Diplo rang in the new year with a mix that captures some of the best of the old one. The DJ and producer has shared a two-hour mix including plenty of familiar names. Kanye West, Drake, Disclosure, Daft Punk, Rihanna, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, A$AP Rocky, and others appear.” — SPIN (via SoundCloud)

9) Lee Bannon, Alternate/Endings. “Lee Bannon is a Sacramento producer whose hip-hop instrumental blueprint begins with the jagged, foggy breaks of DJ Premier but quickly diverts into a number of directions, touching on glitch, witchhouse, post-crunk, and drum’n’bass. Bannon can knock out gulping boom bap for Joey Bada$$ and Ab-Soul, remix Andy Stott’s ‘Numb,’ and scrape out an EP of eerie soundcapes fit for release on Hospital Productions with the same nervy, experimental confidence.” — SPIN (via Pitchfork)

10) You Blew It!, Keep Doing What You’re Doing. “We already heard two songs from Florida emo titans You Blew It!’s new Keep Doing What You’re Doing, the relatively jubilant and uptempo ‘Award Of The Year Award’ and the relatively downcast and dramatic ‘House Address.’ The album’s out next week, and as albums tend to these days, the whole thing’s streaming online a week in advance. It’ll flash you back to (ahem) sunnier days on this bitterly cold winter afternoon.” — Stereogum (via Pitchfork)
