album art of the year?

walking on a dream (click for larger image)

I can't get enough of Empire of the Sun's perfect end-of-summer single, "Walking on a Dream," which has quickly become one of my favorite songs of the year, and accompanies me just about everywhere I go lately. Thanks to James for sending over the just-released, epically fantastical art for the duo's debut record, which was inspired by the time Luke Steele + Nick Littlemore spent in Shanghai filming their first video. Can't wait to hear the full record -- due out in October -- but here's a remix of the first single from Nick's big brother, Sam La More:

Also, in addition to making me nostalgic for the over-the-top movie posters of my youth, that ridiculous cover got me thinking about the best album art of '08. I'm sort of drawing a blank right now, but I've posted a few more of my favorites from this year after the jump...who am I missing?

The Coast Guard has closed down the New York waterways and as a result we won't be sailing on Saturday night. We have RESCHEDULED the party for SUNDAY AFTERNOON. Boarding begins at 2 pm and we'll sail from 3 until 6 pm.

If you've already bought tickets you should have received instructions on how to obtain refunds if you cannot make it to the party on Sunday. For refunds, please email info@ticketweb.com, or call 1-866-777-8932.

Hopefully you'll all be able to make it as its going to be a wild afternoon with a very special set from GILDAS + MASAYA from Kitsune Paris.

Added bonus, we'll get to cruise right by the WATERFALLS!

The party Sunday is rain or shine. Advanced tickets available here.

It seems blind optimism isn't the way to go for Saturday. Here's something I strongly recommend that's going on indoors at Santos. New York's own DJ Spun will be there with special guest DJ Kaos from Berlin. Kaos is great. I picked up his album Hello Stranger when it came out back in 2005 just for the track "Lessons In Love" during the height of an obsession with Erlend Oye (who does guest vocals on the track) and wound up really liking the entire thing. It's funky and disco-ey in a modern, updated way and his live sets are the same...occasionally throwing back a bit more. Regardless of what he plays he's going to leave you wanting to do it at the disco (sound familiar?).

The party is upstairs and it's $5.

Hopefully by Sunday (9/7) any rain will have subsided because there's more going on outside:

Get housed by two teenagers, the Martinez Brothers, at Water Taxi Beach. Check out their August chart and event info below:

No Ordinary Monkey is happening at Grand Ferry Park in Williamsburg. Free from 2pm - 9pm.

And as mentioned above, the People Don't Dance No More boat party has been moved to Sunday.

A quick FYI about some stuff happening early next week:

Monday - Danny Krivit is at the Hudson and Francois K is at Cielo.

And...not-dance related - If it's going to pour and you're looking for stuff to do I recommend hitting the movies and seeing "Man On Wire". I'm not posting the trailer because I think it spoils it, but basically...in 1974 a young Frenchman, Philippe Petit strung a wire between the tops of the Twin Towers and walked it. This film tells the amazing story of how he and his friends planned it out. It's an interesting, beautiful, moving story and the film was done extremely well. Check it out!

Amazon Selling OK Computer For $1.99

Arguably the world's most popular contemporary band, Radiohead once let you choose your own price for the digital version of their record. Now Amazon is allowing you to remain a cheap bastard without all the guilt and guesswork.

In case the headline didn't make it clear enough, this week Amazon is making Radiohead's classic - and what many consider their best - album OK Computer for $1.99. No more guesswork needed, at least for this week.

Happy 25th Birthday, VMAs

Will you watch? Sunday night is football night in America, says Al. But also it marks the Silver Anniversary of MTV's Video Music Awards, and despite last year's masterful display of waning cultural relevance, there may be reasons still to tune in that don't relate strictly to masochism and/or self-hatred. Like, there's Kanye's show-closing performance of the new single "Love Lockdown." (You are entitled to think he's forgiven MTV for hating black people, although I suggest you think he understands the promotional opportunity this affords his new single, which just happens to be going on sale the next day.)

There will also be a Britney Spears opening segment! I was wrong yesterday, though: She will not be performing, just doing something "fun and unexpected." This diminishes the show's imminent train wreckability. I'm not sure if that makes it more or less watchable. Other stuff that'll make it more (or, less) watchable includes Kid Rock and Lil Wayne together at last, Katy Perry covering "Like A Virgin," and performances from Rihanna, T.I. (Feat. Rihanna), T-Pain, Lupe, Paramore, the Ting Tings, the Jonas Bros. You can be sure Russell Brand will be sexually inappropriate and pretty British as host, if that's your spot of tea. And if the awards themselves are more your thing, sorry: the bands you like already won what they're going to win. But in case you will/are forced to watch anyway, here's a scorecard so you can play along at home, followed by a drinking game suggestion to make the time go by, and a very special message from Lou Reed:

the Rapture

Hope you had fun last night. There's a lot more dance headed your way this weekend. Here's what's going on Friday (9/5) alone:

Awesome electro rockers (who I wish would play some concerts soon), the Rapture (more specifically Vito & Druzzi) come out of hiding to deejay First Fridays at the Guggenheim. The party goes from 9pm - 1am. Admission is $25 at the door or free if you're a member of the Guggenheim.

From there if you want to stay more on the electro side of things, Robot Rock has a great line-up at Le Royale this week with Treasure Fingers, AC Slater, and DJ Krames.

AC Slater - Jack Got Jacked - out Sept. 30th on Palms Out Sounds

Btw - A.C.'s got a new track, "Jack Got Jacked" coming out on Palms Out Sounds on September 30th. Check it out on his myspace, and also check out Jack Beats' great remix of it (which is also going to be released along with the original on the 30th)here.

Free with RSVP to list@gbh.tv with your name and number of guests. When you arrive, ask for the GBH guest list.

Friday is also the debut of a new FREE weekly party by Nick Catchdubs, DJ Ayres, and Jubilee at Public Assembly called Flashing Lights:Strictly electronic club music, no bullsh!t - house, disco, techno, rave and very special guests each week, including our friend KLEVER from ATL (download his "Ski Mask Way" mix at the top of this post) who will be kicking off the inaugural edition!

In addition to throwing parties Nick has been busy mixing things up lately. Download the Radio Friendly Unit Shifter mix he did with Mr. Ducker for NY-based streetwear company, Mishka, at the top of this post:My good friend Mr. Ducker isn't a DJ, but he always wanted to make an ultimate '90s tape, something that brought a mixshow vibe to alt nation sounds. When he asked me to get down with his dream and collaborate, we delved deep into our middle and high school record collections (and used CD bargain bins) and brainstormed new ways to present all the alternative music we grew up on. We were inspired by DJ Spinbad's impossibly fun '80s pop mixes: big hits next to unexpected favorites with lots of movie dialogue and interludes for jokes, all smashed up in a dance party megamixxx. Picking from hundreds of beloved Buzz Bin jams was easier said than done (sorry Superdrag, you'll make Vol. 2!), but with the Mishka crew's annual trip to Magic in Las Vegas giving us an actual deadline, we finally finished this badmotorfinger as a giveaway CD for their new season. Even with double digit-old tunes, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter feels right on time, connecting the dots between Sonic Youth breakbeats, weeded Lollapalooza rap, gloriously fuzzed-out one hit wonders and much more. No irony, no empty nostalgia, just a lot of music we love that shaped what we do today. They used to play King Missile on the radio! In America! Download and enjoy. - Nick Catchdubs

Radio Friendly Unit Shifter Tracklisting:
1. L7 - Pretend We're Dead

Doors 10pm. $5 before midnight, $10 after.

Don't bother stopping...before you know it you'll be back out dancing again (hopefully in the sunshine) Saturday & Sunday - posts are on their way!

New Deerhoof Live Video - "The Tears And Music Of Love"

Technically Deerhoof's first Offend Maggie single was the "Fresh Born" sheet music, but you get to hear the band themselves in this clip of the album's opening jam in Tokyo this past June. it's a taut song, Greg Saunier pounding away on the drums, per usual, while the guitarists synchronize themselves and work as an angular (but crunchy) rhythmic backdrop for Satomi's bass and vocalizations. "Let's go, let's go, let's go, green valley..."

Esau Mwamwaya Reworks "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa"

Mwamwaya will soon release a collab LP with Radioclit, featuring the likes of M.I.A., Santogold, and Ezra and the Vampires. Hear the Malawian's appropriation of Vampire Weekend's Afro-pop appropriation by heading to MySpace. While you're there, listen to everything on the page -- it's good. (via GvsB)

new love is all :: "epic" (faith no more cover)

Love Is All have a new LP called A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night coming out in November. You can pre-order it here now, and you'll get a free 7" and accompanying immediate digital download, featuring lead single"Wishing Well," and the band's maybe slightly gimmicky but still totally rad cover of Faith No More's "Epic". Recommended! And in case you still haven't heard the single:

New Last Shadow Puppets Video - "My Mistakes Were Made For You"

Mercury Prize voters: Alex Turner has a worthy project called the Last Shadow Puppets that is up for your consideration, and in case you forgot, here is a Richard Ayoade-directed video to help refresh your recollection. Here the Arctic heartthrob and his fellow Puppeteer Miles Kane of the Rascals move about a bit more than during the mod-era TV-show "Standing Next To Me," talking midnight strolls through dense fog and along winding roads, meeting up in a gazebo to sing about mistakes and admire each others' leather jackets.

East Village Radio Music Festival MAY move to Sunday

The debut of the East Village Radio Music Festival may be delayed by one day due to the heavy rains and gusty winds expected for New York City throughout Saturday, as tropical storm Hanna moves up the East Coast.

Organizers will evaluate the weather conditions on Saturday morning at 6 a.m. and determine if the festival will go forward on Saturday, or be delayed one day until Sunday.Complete second stage lineup below...

New Zach Hill Video - "Stoic Logic" (Featuring No Age)

Zach Hills brings a lot to Marnie Stern's This Is It.... On his own recent solo album The Astrological Straits, he in turn benefits from the help of his friends, including Stern (and Les Claypool, the Deftones' Chino Moreno, No Age, the Flying Luttenbacher's Jonathon Hicshke, an Rx Bandit, a Hella mate, etc). Much like the kinetic, kaleidoscopic Play-Doh/cactus-filled "Hindsight Is Nowhere" clip, this over-the-top "Stoic Logic" color explosion hits like a visual sugar rush. There are a couple major differences between this and the last one, though.

Crom - 2008 Tour Dates (tonight and stuff)

Crom (via Vice)

Instead of going on and on about Crom, who are playing late tonight at Cake Shop with Villains (doors at 12AM), I figure I will let Crom's guitarist Phil Vera (ex-16 and Despise You) try and persuade you:VICE: Let's try a fill in the blank, it's easier. For the unassociated: Crom is a ________ band. We sound like ______.
Crom: Crom is a shitty band. We sound like garbage.

....In other words, the average person at a Crom show is...
Fat kids, the associated press, train-jumping crusties, nothing worth fucking, and the spirit of beerwolf.

Dude, come on.
I know this sounds like a joke, but it's totally fucking true.OK, maybe that didn't work.... but imagine if Girl Talk decided to splice together some of the greatest metal riffs of all time, add in some sludge-grind of his own (thats a fun thought), and interweave the whole thing with Conan The Barbarian samples.... thats kinda what you would get with Crom.

Yes, I just mentioned Crom and Girl Talk in the same sentence.

Crom's sample-heavy metal assault is scheduled for a live WFMU "sesh" before skipping around the east coast and finally to Rockstar Bar in Brooklyn on Sept 13th (the same day as Lightning Bolt & Krallice). All dates below...

The Cribs cancelled their US tour, working with Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr as a Modest Mouse member (more by Ryan Muir)
The Cribs - complete with Johnny Marr as part of their line-up - have revealed that they plan to release a new single this year during an exclusive video interview with NME.COM. The band had already revealed that they will record a full album in early 2009, but made the single revelation while speaking to NME.COM at the Leeds Festival on Friday (August 22).

"We don't know when it's going to happen, but we'll try and do that [release a single before the year ends]," said Marr. The Cribs were scheduled to kick off a U.S. tour at Irving Plaza in NYC tonight (Sept 5), but it looks like all those shows were cancelled (again).

New Kaiser Chiefs Video - "Never Miss A Beat"

In "Never Miss A Beat" we're we're told "it's cool to know nothing." Except how to coordinate your outfits for properly dividing into flashy masked and mimed gangs. The video for the Kaiser Chiefs' Mark Ronson-produced anthem finds the youths of today dressed like birds, box heads, and even Steve Erkel, scaring the local constable, making the locals close shop early, and encouraging KC to rock out in the midst of it. It comes with a very Michael Jackson-esque ending. Not in the creepy pajama and wheelchair sense.

Oasis Have An Opinion On Radiohead's Politics

I know this will shock your lightning, but said Opinion is rather negative. Since blasting Radiohead is currently en vogue, and three makes a trend, here's this bit via Details:

They're [Radiohead] middle-class boys worrying about pushing an envelope somewhere, and all that carbon footprint and all that bollocks. Every time there's a polar bear on his tiptoes on an ice cube in the middle of the Antarctic, you know whose fault that is? Rock stars'. That's their fault. Any time there's food running out somewhere-- 'Let's do a gig. That'll sort it out. Let's do a big fucking gig. Let's fly everybody in from all over the world and pontificate to poor people about how they should be saving the planet.' Go fucking kiss my ass. It's very easy to just say, 'We're going to become difficult now and challenge our audience.' I like my audience. They paid for my swimming pool. I'm not fucking challenging anybody.

Certainly not the first time he's gone after Radiohead, but I think ultimately Noel's still sore about that "Wonderwall" piss take from years back. In more surprising Oasis Have An Opinion news, Mr. Gallagher likes something: Ryan Adams. (It's mutual.)

'Outpost in the Burbs' throws shows in Montclair too

The Wellmont Theatre is not the only venue in Montclair, NJ holding interesting concerts. "Outpost in the Burbs" holds shows at religious and educational institutions. Tonight's Steve Earle show at The First Congregational Church is sold out (Sept 5), though the Graham Parker show on September 26th still has tickets available
