Is it really such a surprise that Tom DeLonge is directing a feature-length movie about San Diego skateboarders and extraterrestrials?
Let’s revisit how we got here: The former Blink-182 co-frontman has made aliens his priority in recent years, even over his current primary musical project Angels and Airwaves. DeLonge quit Blink-182 last year to get serious about UFOs and has, among other things, co-authored two “non-fiction” books–about UFOs and the ancient Mayans and stuff–as part of his new real-X-Files multimedia project Sekret Machines. He also released the first of a trilogy of sci-fi young adult fiction books called Strange Times. And he’s clearly been exploring the idea of working in the cinematic medium for a while: The Wikileaks dump last year evidenced that DeLonge had been in communication with former Obama Counselor and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta about a documentary about UFOs and mind control.
DeLonge’s upcoming film, as THR reports, is based on the Strange Times book franchise, which also has a graphic novel and designer skateboard deck associated with it. In addition to directing, DeLonge is producing the movie and co-wrote the script with regular collaborator Ben Kull. The soundtrack, of course, is all Angels and Airwaves.
Here’s what DeLonge had to say about the project to THR:
“I grew up in Southern California as a disaffected young skateboarder who broke the occasional law or five, and I was always dreaming about the world around me, obsessively looking for the more unusual and imaginative experiences that life has to offer.”
