Variety reports today that famed movie auteurs Joel and Ethan Coen are finally making the leap to television, partnering with Annapurna’s television division on a limited show called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. The new show is a Western. In addition to directing the series, they wrote the script from “an original idea,” according to Variety.

The Coens had little to report on the series other than its title, but sources from Annapurna told Variety that the company “intends to pursue an innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical [release].” There was no further elucidation of how this might work.

This will be the Coen’s second notable foray into true-blue period Westerns, following their 2010 remake of True Grit. It is one of Annapurna’s first forays into the realm of television after being active in film (Sausage Party, American Hustle, Spring Breakers, etc.) production for five years.
