Soundgarden reissue season continues in 2017, with an expanded and freshly mixed reissue of the band’s 1988 debut Ultramega OK due out March 10 from Sub Pop. (Their 1991 album Badmotorfinger received the reissue treatment for its 25th anniversary last November.) To prepare, they’ve shared an early version of Ultramega OK track “Beyond the Wheel,” one of six bonus tracks on the expanded reissue. Per Sub Pop:

The [early versions] were recorded in 1987 on 8-track tape by Jack Endino and Chris Hanzsek at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, and mixed by Jack Endino in 2016. These versions feature the band in raw, powerful form—sonically closer to the band’s Endino-recorded six-song debut, Screaming Life—and provide a fascinating window into the development of songs that eventually became staples of the band’s set.

The other songs that will appear in their early versions on the Ultramega OK reissue are “Head Injury,” “He Didn’t,” “All Your Lies,” and two different takes of “Incessant Mace.” Listen to the early version of “Beyond the Wheel” and compare to the standard version below.
