Even Father John Misty’s most serious songs usually arrive with a wink and a swagger, but “Two Wildly Different Perspectives,” his latest, takes a straightforwardly solemn tone. Over quietly adventurous production anchored by funereal piano and stuttering drums, Josh Tillman sings about the chasm over which all political discussions seem to take place today: “One side says, ‘Y’all go to hell’ / The other says, ‘If I believed in God, I’d send you there.'”
“Two Wildly Different Perspectives” was released today, accompanied by a video in which children do adult things like play with guns and sit around an office conference room table. It follows a video for “Pure Comedy,” released last week, in advance of a full-length of the same name which will arrive April 7 via Sub Pop/Bella Union. “More kids are going to die now thanks to the unbelievably selfish immigration policy of places like Saudi Arabia and the USA,” Tillman wrote in a Facebook post when sharing the “Two Wildly Different Perspectives” video.
