Cops: Allman Brothers Band Drummer Killed Himself

<> at Beacon Theatre on March 1, 2013 in New York City.

Butch Trucks, the legendary drummer for the Allman Brothers Band who died Tuesday at the age of 69, shot himself in front of his wife in their West Palm Beach condo, according to police reports obtained by The Miami Herald.

The Herald reports that Tuesday evening police received a call from a woman described as “hysterical” saying that her “husband just shot himself” with a handgun. The caller, who the report noted had difficulty speaking in full sentences, confirmed that Trucks was still alive and apparently told the dispatcher that she’d witnessed the shooting. Trucks reportedly died not long after police arrived.

Trucks was one of the Allman Brothers Band’s original members and was ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the top 100 drummers in rock history.

“I’ve lost another brother, and it hurts beyond words,” Gregg Allman said in a statement on Wednesday. “Butch and I knew each other since we were teenagers, and we were bandmates for over 45 years.”
