New Music: Yo Gotti & Kodak Black – “Weatherman”

Yo Gotti—who released his fifth studio album, The Art of Hustle, in February and achieved upper-echelon status in the meme world with the proliferation of its Top 40 hit, “Down in the DM”—is back with a sunny new dope-slinging anthem. The central synth chime is half-church bell, half-steel drum, and Kodak Black, out of prison pending sordid sexual battery charges, plays second fiddle to Gotti (“I just bought my mom a Louie handbag / I just ran a target for 10 bands”). Gotti fully hammers home the track’s extended metaphor while wrapping his verse: “They like ‘Gotti what the forecast say?’/’I predict a lotta snow comin’ in.”

If you were a fan of Kodak and French’s “Lockjaw” from earlier this year, this brisk, lively track makes for a more-than-decent sequel. Meanwhile, Kodak’s video for his first post-prison single, “There He Go,” is racking up views past the 7 million mark.
