Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan has surveyed the charred remains of 2016 and given us a grimly topical new holiday song, “Happy New Year (Prince Can’t Die Again).” “It was a year when everybody died,” McCaughan begins over a catchy acoustic strum.

According to the song’s description on Bandcamp, “Happy New Year” was “written and recorded Dec 24, 2016 in a moment of trying to look at any possible bright side of the coming new year after the disaster that was this one,” which means that yes, George Michael died the very next day. Stream “Happy New Year” below while you’re still alive to hear it.
