When the boys from Bear Hands took the SPIN stage at this year’s Toyota Music Den at Voodoo Fest, there was a murmur of surprise that went through the crowd. How was this band, so defined by their eclectic mix of indie guitar rock and synth-driven rock, going to do with a semi-acoustic set? Very, very well it appears. Any questions were immediately answered when the New York-based group let their layered song structures take over the tent and curl up to the ears of the capacity crowd. There was an astounding warmth to their 30-minute set, and nowhere was that more apparent than in the anti-FOMO anthem “2 AM” off the band’s 2016 album You’ll Pay for This.
