Today, the director of David Bowie’s original 1973 video for “Life on Mars?” has released a compelling, drastically recut version of the iconic clip via The Guardian. This just-unveiled version integrates new footage of Bowie waiting and goofing around between takes. It’s a poignant juxtaposition of musical legend and man. The clip is serving as promotion for Parlophone’s new Bowie Legacy double CD, due out next Thursday, which will include an unreleased version of “Life on Mars?”
For now, watch the video over at The Guardian. Also worth noting: BBC Radio 2 will be premiering a new radio documentary about the making of and legacy of the song, on January 4.
And as if that wasn’t plenty, the BBC announced last night that they will be bringing a new Bowie documentary to the small screen, David Bowie: The Last Five Years. Due to air in January, the film will discuss and include new footage of Bowie’s life and process during the making of Blackstar and The Next Day. The BBC already released David Bowie: Five Years, by the same director, earlier this year, and will be offering up more Bowie programming in the coming months.
The corporation is also sitting on an extensive archive of rare Bowie interviews, performances, and videos, which they are compiling to be broadcast in the form of a Bowie at the BBC special. According to Pitchfork, this is due to be broadcast next month.
