Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek Will Play Freddie Mercury in Upcoming Biopic

Mr. Robot star Rami Malek will portray Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a long-awaited biopic, Deadline reports. The film, which has been in development for eight years, finally has a working title: Bohemian Rhapsody. Director Bryan Singer confirmed the news in an Instagram post (below).

Bohemian Rhapsody is expected to begin shooting next year. The latest version of the script is by Anthony McCarten, who wrote the 2014 Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor are on board as music producers.

Malek won an Emmy this year for his work on Mr. Robot. Sacha Baron Cohen was previously attached to the role of Mercury, but left the production in 2013 after creative differences with the surviving members of Queen.
