New Google Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them App Lets You Turn Your Phone Into a Wand

Google, in collaboration with Warner Bros., has unveiled a new multiplatform app to coincide with the November 18 release of the J.K.-Rowling-scripted film adaptation Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is set in the extended Harry Potter universe. The app’s capabilities include a Google Maps-driven tour of mythical, wizard-populated 1926 New York, where the film is set.

There will also be a component—accessible with a Daydream View VR headset—which allows you to “explore the magic of [Eddie Redmayne’s character] Newt’s case, a treasure trove full of everything he needs to cast spells, solve puzzles and find his beasts” by using your phone as a wand.

If you want more limited, IRL wand capabilities, “OK Google” voice commands will allow you to do a limited number of “spells,” including turning on your phone’s flashlight (“Lumos!”) or shuttering the phone (“Nox!”) “Silenco” should be self-explanatory. Life in your home city is about to get a lot more annoying, presumably; consider staying indoors for a few days.
