Netflix Announces Three New Dave Chappelle Specials

Netflix’s comedy lineup is going to get even stronger with new Dave Chappelle material coming in 2017. The streaming service announced on Twitter today that it’s going to release three new specials from the legendary comedian. One special will feature new material, while the other two will come from Chappelle’s “personal comedy vault.” The new specials will be Chappelle’s first since 2004’s Dave Chappelle: For What It’s Worth.

“Dave Chappelle is a legendary voice in comedy — searing, vital, and now more than ever, essential,” Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP, original documentary and comedy, said in a statement. “Dave’s three new specials promise to be some of the most anticipated events in comedy, and we are honored he will mark his global return on Netflix.”

Chappelle has made a comeback this year, following a number of stand-up appearances with his recent stint hosting Saturday Night Live. That telecast was the sketch show’s first episode after the contentious 2016 election, and featured the newly revitalized A Tribe Called Quest as the musical guest. His opening monologue was met with wide appraisal, and he notably brought back several of his most famous characters from Chappelles Show for a Walking Dead spoof.

Netflix’s announcement is another reminder of how it’s been overtaking HBO as the premier spot for stand-up comedy. Back in October, the service announced that they signed Chris Rock for two specials. Plenty to look forward to.
