Video: John Cale – “Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen Cover)

John Cale is prepping an expanded reissue of his 1992 live album, Fragments of a Rainy Season. To promote it, he created a new music video for his old cover of Leonard Cohen’s classic “Hallelujah.” The grim clip, directed by Abby Portner, opens with a quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth and depicts Cale playing a piano infested with bugs, allowing insects to crawl over his face, and finally taking an ax to a miniature piano. It also stars Arlene Deradoorian, sister of musician Angel Deradoorian, as a woman in a red dress.

Cale first released this video on November 2, but his cover has gained fresh notice since news of Cohen’s death broke last night. The Fragments of a Rainy Season reissue is out on December 9 from Domino.
