This week’s Adult Swim Single is Vince Staples “’06.” You’ve heard some of it before: A fraction of the song serves as the closer to Staples’ stunning debut album, last year’s Summertime ’06. The track cuts off about midway through the first verse, interrupted by a rush of static. The white noise was a nihilistic kiss-off, a reminder that the bleak tales featured on Summertime ’06 — which sadly are a reality for many black youths — are a source of entertainment for many who get to watch from afar.

As a single, the instrumental’s disconcerting honks and Staples’ blunt verses are a worthwhile prelude to his fast-approaching Prima Donna EP, which drops this Friday. Stream the full version of “’06” over at Adult Swim.
