Frank Ocean Is Livestreaming… Something

Update 2: The FADER has discovered that the boombox in Frank Ocean’s livestreamed video is actually a piece by artist Tom Sachs. According to the FADER, who spoke to Sachs today, the piece is called Toyan’s, it was made in 2002, and it is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum.

The video, according to Sachs, “was shot in the past year.” He was involved in the making of it, but chose not to reveal to the FADER what the man within is building. “You’ve got to watch it like everyone else and see,” he said.

Update: The live stream has changed. There’s a dark figure moving around, possibly building something in a woodworking shop, and there’s ambient music playing in the background. The mystery builds…

Frank Ocean is being cryptic for a change. This morning, the singer’s little-updated website, boysdontcry.co, added an Apple Music-hosted video live stream. At the moment, there’s not much to see — just a shot of some workbenches and other equipment in a warehouse-type room. (If you can’t watch it on your laptop, try your phone. That seems to be working best for most viewers.)

Pitchfork, who apparently looked into the source code, notes that the site has been updated with a “boysdontcry” graphic and details of Kanye West web designer David Baker. Do with that what you will.

It’s the first update since last month’s “due date” book-return slip, which seemingly indicated that Ocean’s long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s channel ORANGE, likely titled Boys Don’t Cry, could arrive in July 2016 — which, as we now know, didn’t happen. Because today is August 1, 2016. How time flies.
