Benjamin John Power doesn’t appear to be super-busy with F**k Buttons right now, seeing as the last time the post-apocalyptic instrumental project’s founding member released a track with co-Button Andrew Hung, it was last year’s Jean-Michel Jarre collab, “Immortals.” Since then, Power (who currently records as Blanck Mass) released the Great Confuso EP, the follow-up to 2015 LP Dumb Flesh. Now, Power has a brand-new track and video, released as part of the Adult Swim Singles Program, called “D7-D5.”
Also released under the Blanck Mass name and set to come out as a limited 12-inch vinyl this September, “D7-D5” clocks in at eight minutes, but no second is wasted. The supersonic industrial techno cut reverberates with icy percussion clicks, and, in time, layers on ultra-crisp slice-and-diced vocals.
“‘D7-D5’ is intended as the second move in a game of chess initially instigated by Manuel Gottsching when he released (and named said release) ‘E2-E4,’ the recording which many believe pioneered techno,” Power tells SPIN over email. “The video was made by [my] good friend Jake McGowan, and follows one man whilst he struggles to deal with a flurry of emotions and human states which are common during a battle of any size, including a game of chess.”
