The Avalanches Take ‘Subways’ Back to Their Classic Sound

After a more-or-less 15-year wait for new Avalanches material since their standard-bearing LP Since I Left You, now it feels like every other day we’re getting a new song from the sampladelic Australian dance collective. Following “Frankie Sinatra” and “Colours,” the group has now released “Subways,” along with a sketched visual picturing two female figures smoking cigarettes. Of the advance tracks from the upcoming Wildflower, the track is easily the closest to the Avs’ classic sound, with sweeping strings, ecstatic vocals, and finely chopped samples of the likes of the Bar-Kays and Chandra.
