Reggae Great Max Romeo Returns to His Roots With ‘Give Thanks To Jehovah’

Legendary roots reggae artist Max Romeo earned his distinguished status via his 1976 LP War Ina Babylon, a politically conscious work recorded with storied backing band the Upsetters. Recently, Romeo begun working with producer Daniel Boyle, a devotee and musical partner of Lee “Scratch” Perry. Recorded throughout 2015 and tracked live with primarily vintage equipment, the result is the full-length Horror Zone. The work reinvigorates Romeo’s moving messages and raw, ephemeral sound, bringing his inspired narrative into the culturally questionable landscape of the 21st century. The lead single “Give Praise To Jehovah,” imbued with soulful, layered vocals and earthy chords, gives voice to the artist’s cautious optimism: “Take me out of the darkness and into the light.”
