Chad Smith and Will Ferrell Make Drumming a Team Sport at Red Hot Benefit Gig

Last night, celebrity doppelgängers Will Ferrell and Chad Smith teamed up once more last night at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, for the Red Hot Benefit Comedy + Music Show & Quinceañera event. The main event of the proceedings was, of course, a drum-off between the longtime rivals — though this time, they did it playground style, choosing their own teams of esteemed timekeepers to help out with the stickwork. (Smith selected Foo Fighters‘ Taylor Hawkins, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, and the Police’s Stewart Copeland, while Ferrell drafted teen sensation Andy Lee, fellow comedian Fred Armisen, and Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood.)

The two teams proceeded to play through seven Red Hot Chili Peppers jams, including “Otherside,” “By the Way,” and an encore of their “Higher Ground” cover. You can watch video of the drummer intros (starting around the 13-minute mark) below, courtesy of video sponsors Funny or Die (h/t Pitchfork), as well as Periscope footage of the whole concert from comedian Brody Stevens.
