Smashing Pumpkins began their U.S. tour with Liz Phair in Portland, Oregon, last night, where they added a few surprise covers, including David Bowie (“Space Oddity”) and Natalie Imbruglia (“Identify”). But perhaps the most exciting cover was a take on Hole’s “Malibu.” Billy Corgan co-wrote the song with Courtney Love and Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson, though singer-songwriter and Pumpkins associate Katie Cole took lead vocals in concert.
